Inspector Elizabeth Osikolu testified at the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court that a Lagos housewife, Omolara Alashe, allegedly coerced a 19-year-old girl into a sexual relationship with her husband, Ramoni Lateef, to bear a child for them. Both Omolara Alashe and her husband are facing charges of conspiracy, rape, and sexual assault in connection with the case.
Inspector Osikolu testified that the alleged incident occurred in 2022. The teenage victim, who had recently lost her mother, was offered shelter by a couple in their Ojota residence. However, the victim’s stay took a dark turn, as she disclosed that the male defendant (Alashe) regularly pressured her into having relations with the other defendant (Lateef).
The victim also reported physical abuse, stating that the couple would beat her whenever she made mistakes in the household. The lead state counsel, Mr. Babajide Boye, had the police witness detail the abuse and explain the severity of the allegations. A witness testified in court that the female defendant (Omolara) allegedly woke the 19-year-old victim in the middle of the night, stripped her, and allowed the male defendant (Ramoni) to assault her.
The investigating police officer (IPO) testified that Omolara and Ramoni had lost a baby in October 2022, after which Omolara was unable to conceive. Allegedly, the couple decided to use the 19-year-old girl to bear children for Ramoni to prevent him from marrying someone else. The officer described incidents of abuse, including Omolara beating and assaulting the girl, and then seizing her ATM card, phone, and salary to control her access to money.
Under cross-examination, the defense questioned the victim’s account, but the IPO maintained the girl’s testimony was truthful and noted that Omolara had admitted to some actions in her statement. The victim had reported the abuse to the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) and sought a medical examination at the Mirabel Centre, indicating she did not consent. The case was adjourned until February 3, 2025, for further proceedings.
