Imo State Police Arrest 64-Year-Old Barrister for Allegedly Killing 16-Year-Old Student

The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 64-year-old landlord, Barrister Donald Mbamah, for allegedly shooting and killing 16-year-old Paul Victor, a student of Urban Development Secondary School, Owerri.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday, March 17, 2025, in the World Bank Housing area of Owerri. Paul had jumped over the school fence into Mbamah’s compound to retrieve a football when the property owner allegedly shot him in the waist. He was rushed to the Specialist Hospital, Umuguma, where he underwent surgery. Despite efforts to save him, Paul succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
His guardian, Mr. Jonathan Odikanwa, who had cared for Paul for over seven years, confirmed his passing, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. Medical reports indicated that while an X-ray did not detect a bullet, doctors discovered an obstruction in his bowel, leading to the operation. Unfortunately, he did not survive.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with many questioning the use of lethal force over a little matter. The Imo State Police Command, through its spokesperson DSP Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrest of Mbamah, stating that investigations are ongoing. The suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and legal proceedings will follow once evidence is fully gathered.
The police have urged the public to remain calm and allow justice to take its course while extending their condolences to the affected child’s family.
