INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY 2025: CELEBRATING MEN AND BOYS, CHAMPIONING WELL-BEING, AND BREAKING THE SILENCE AROUND EMOTIONAL HEALTH

Every year on November 19, the world pauses to celebrate International Men’s Day,  a day dedicated to acknowledging the positive value that men bring to their families, communities, and societies. It is a moment to highlight the everyday contributions of men and boys, honour positive role models, and shine a light on their well-being in a world where their struggles often go unnoticed.

The theme for 2025, “Celebrating Men and Boys”, brings renewed attention to the unique experiences, pressures, and expectations men face across cultures. Over time, this day has grown into an important platform, not just for celebrating accomplishments but for opening honest conversations about the emotional, mental, and social challenges many men navigate silently.

Why This Day Matters More Than Ever

Around the world, men and boys experience pressures shaped by long-standing cultural expectations. They are taught to be protectors, providers, and problem-solvers yet rarely given permission to express fear, sadness, or vulnerability. Too many have grown up believing that tears signal weakness and that asking for help reduces their worth.

Recent research paints a sobering picture:
Men are up to three times more likely than women to die by suicide, with emotional isolation emerging as a major driver. Studies reveal that many men quietly battle depression, anxiety, and chronic stress, often without seeking help. They admit they fear being judged or seen as weak, so they bottle up emotions until they are overwhelmed.

This “hidden loneliness” shows up in many forms; withdrawing from loved ones, avoiding conversations about personal struggles, performing strength on the outside while hurting on the inside. Many men remain socially connected yet emotionally disconnected, living behind masks because society has rarely invited them to take them off.

Overcoming Emotional Isolation: A Path Forward for Men

Experts emphasize that addressing emotional isolation is not weakness rather it is courage. It is self-care. And it is necessary.
Practical steps that help men reclaim emotional health include:

1. Honest self-reflection
Simple daily practices like journaling, mindfulness, or silent check-ins can help men understand what they are truly feeling beneath the surface.

2. Building emotionally safe connections
Opening up to even one trusted partner, friend, or family member can create powerful ripple effects that deepen relationships.

3. Seeking early professional support
Therapy is not only for crisis moments; it can be preventive and transformative, providing a non-judgmental space to unpack complex emotions.

4. Challenging limiting beliefs
Redefining masculinity to include emotional honesty dismantles harmful stereotypes and promotes healthier expressions of strength.

5. Establishing healthy routines
Balanced sleep, exercise, reduced alcohol intake, and mindfulness habits contribute significantly to emotional stability.

Why International Men’s Day Must Continue

International Men’s Day is not about elevating men above others. It is not a reaction to women’s issues nor an attempt to minimize gender-based challenges faced by women and girls.

Instead, the day helps restore emotional balance by recognising men as human beings with dreams, vulnerabilities, and needs.

We need this day because:

  • Boys must grow up knowing it is okay to cry ad express how they feel.

  • Fathers should feel safe opening up without shame.

  • Men must be encouraged to seek help early.

  • Families benefit when men feel emotionally grounded.

  • Societies grow healthier when men are supported, not isolated.

When men feel supported, families become more harmonious. When boys learn emotional literacy, they grow into respectful, empathetic men. When fathers are emotionally present, children flourish. When men heal, communities heal with them.

The Six Pillars of International Men’s Day

At its core, the day promotes six key pillars that guide its mission:

  • Celebrating positive male role models across all walks of life.

  • Recognising men’s contributions to family, community, childcare, and society.

  • Prioritising men’s physical, mental, and emotional health.

  • Highlighting discrimination men face in social attitudes, law, and services.

  • Promoting gender equality and improving relationships.

  • Creating a world where men and boys can reach their full potential.

A Call to Honour the Men in Our Lives

As we mark International Men’s Day 2025, let us appreciate the fathers, brothers, sons, partners, mentors, and friends who enrich our lives. And just as importantly, let us commit to supporting those who suffer silently. Because when men learn to feel, families learn to heal and societies learn to grow.
