‘I’ve Aborted Thrice for my School Principal’, 14-Year-Old Student Tells Ondo Court

A 14-year-old student testified in court about alleged abuse by her 55-year-old school principal, who is also a clergyman. She stated the abuse began when she was 10 years old, after her parents entrusted her to his care for education. The student alleged she was forced into intercourse on her first day in his home. She claimed there were multiple pregnancies that were terminated.
The student alleges the principal impregnated her three times and gave her money to buy drugs for abortion. For the third pregnancy, she claims he refused to provide money, so she stole from him to buy abortion pills. The principal reportedly accused her of stealing money for a boyfriend, leading to the arrest of another boy at school. This incident prompted the student to inform her parents about the situation.
The defendant (Obatayo) was arraigned before an Akure Magistrates’ Family Court on three counts: Defilement, Unlawfully prescribing drugs to procure abortion and Killing an unborn child. His pleas were not taken at this stage.
The charges are said to violate Sections 218, 230, and 328 of the Criminal Laws of Ondo State, 2006. Magistrate B.A. Alphonso ordered the defendant to be remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Centre. The case file was directed to be sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice. The Magistrate ordered the victim to be taken in for rehabilitation. The case was adjourned to August 29, 2024 for mentioning.
