The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 21-day notice to the Federal Government, signaling plans to go on strike if their demands are not met. This notice follows a meeting of ASUU’s National Executive Council at the University of Ibadan.

The strike notice is in accordance with labor laws and aims to address unresolved issues from previous agreements with the government. Despite a recent meeting with the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, where ASUU sought to discuss these issues, the agreements have yet to be implemented. ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, noted that if no progress is made, the union will proceed with the strike.

ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke highlighted key demands in the union’s planned strike, including:

  • Non-implementation of 2009 Agreements: Agreements negotiated in 2009 have been pending for over six years without implementation.
  • Accumulated Academic Allowances: Academic allowances for members have been unpaid for over six years.
  • Revitalisation Fund: There was an agreement to raise ₦200 billion annually for five years based on the Needs Assessment Report to support university revitalization.

Since 2013, only one payment has been made toward university revitalization funds, which are needed to upgrade institutions to international standards. This would help attract students and lecturers from abroad. Additionally, the government has not addressed the issue of uncontrolled proliferation of new universities, many of which are approved without adequate funding for their operation.
