Kano Government Set to Prosecute Killers of Mother and Six Children

The Kano State Government will take over the prosecution of suspects linked to the killing of a mother and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi, promising full accountability and justice.
Authorities in Kano State have announced that the trial of suspects involved in the brutal killing of a mother and her six children will soon commence. The state government’s decision follows widespread public outrage over the tragic incident, highlighting the urgent need for child protection and family safety.
The victims, including Fatima Abubakar and her children, were reportedly attacked in their home on a Saturday morning. Preliminary reports indicate that some of the children had just returned from school, while one was reportedly not the biological child of the mother. The assailants allegedly broke into the residence, and despite the woman’s attempts to raise an alarm, the attackers carried out the killings.
Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime: Umar Auwalu, 23; Isyaku Yakubu (also known as Chebe), 40; and Yakubu Abdulaziz (also known as Wawo), 21.
Speaking at a press briefing, Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Maude, SAN, described the killings as “a grave violation of the law and a shocking affront to humanity.” He explained that the government’s takeover of the prosecution followed the directive of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to ensure transparency, accountability, and strict adherence to due process.
“The swift response of our security agencies led to the arrests of the suspects. The state government will ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done,” Maude said, urging residents to remain calm, provide credible information to law enforcement, and remain vigilant.
The investigation, initially handled by the Dorayi Divisional Police Office, was later escalated to the State Criminal Investigation Department, resulting in the suspects’ arrests. Maude commended the police for their professionalism and assured the public that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
Child protection advocates have emphasized that this tragic event shows the importance of safeguarding children and vulnerable family members, reinforcing the need for stronger protective measures in homes and communities across Nigeria.
