Kogi Herder Arrested for Killing 11-Year-Old Son While Grazing

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a herder, Jato Jaye, for allegedly killing his 11-year-old son, Buhari, in Agbaja, Oworo, Lokoja Local Government Area.
Reports said the boy had gone grazing with his father on August 17 but never returned home. His mother, Adama, raised the alarm, prompting a search that led to the discovery of his corpse in the bush two days later.
According to eyewitnesses, the father was allegedly caught at the scene attempting to bury the child’s body secretly. He was immediately taken into custody by police operatives.
During interrogation, Jaye reportedly confessed, claiming he flogged his son with a Fulani stick after the boy “offended him,” which led to the child’s death.
The case, according to sources, will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lokoja for further investigation.
This heartbreaking incident violates the very essence of child rights. The boy’s right to life was cruelly taken from him. His right to protection from violence and abuse was ignored when his father became the source of harm. His dignity was disregarded in both the violence he suffered and the attempt to conceal his death.
Most painfully, his right to parental care and protection was betrayed by the very person entrusted to protect him. Every child deserves love, safety, and care, not violence at the hands of those meant to protect them.
