Man Sentenced to 76 Years in Prison for Child Pornography and Cyber Fraud
A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced Olukeye Adeayo Olalekan to 76 years in prison for crimes including child pornography, cyberstalking, fraud, and money laundering, marking a significant step in the fight to uphold the rights and safety of children in both physical and digital spaces.
The conviction, delivered by Justice Alexander Owoeye, followed Olalekan’s trial on 18 counts brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The offences included the distribution and procurement of child pornography, cyberstalking, obtaining property under false pretences, and concealment of fraudulent funds.
During the trial, the court heard that Olalekan posed as a young woman from North Carolina on platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram. He used these accounts to lure children, solicit explicit images, and threaten their exposure. He was also found to have engaged in financial fraud through deceptive tactics, using cryptocurrency and gift cards to launder proceeds.
Investigations into the case were sparked by the British Columbia Serious Crime Unit, which was probing the murder of 14-year-old Robin Janjus. Forensic analysis of the affected child’s phone led authorities to the convict’s online accounts, exposing a disturbing pattern of exploitation and deception.
This case reveals deep violations of the child’s fundamental rights. These include the right to protection from sexual exploitation and abuse, online safety, the right to be protected from exploitation, and the right to life and development.
Olalekan’s sentencing serves as a stern warning to online predators and highlights the urgent need for continued vigilance in protecting children’s safety in digital environments. It also reinforces the obligation of all stakeholders, governments, parents, educators, and tech platforms, to ensure that every child enjoys their right to grow up free from harm, both online and offline.
