Mother Drowned 2 Children, Waited for Water to Still, Then Turned Herself In

Two young children in Indiana lost their lives in a heartbreaking case that has left their community in shock. Their mother, Brittany Medina, 35, has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to two counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

Her plea, entered in court on Wednesday, could lead to the dismissal of murder charges, but she still faces up to 40 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for October 23.

Police say Medina went to the Lawrence County Jail on September 26, 2023, and told officers that she had drowned her children, just 3 and 1 years old, in the bathtub of their home.

When officers rushed to the house, they found the siblings together in the water. Medina later admitted in a recorded interview that she had been using drugs the night before and claimed she was hearing voices that told her she had to “send her children to heaven.”

She described feeding the children breakfast, putting cartoons on for them, and then, hours later, filling the bathtub and holding them under the water. She said she kissed them and told them she loved them before pushing them down until they stopped moving.

This case is a devastating reminder of the violation of child’s right to life, survival, and development, especially from a mother who should care for them.  No child should ever be denied their most basic right, to live safely and grow in love and security.
