The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the detention of 75 Nigerians, including 28 teenagers, for 60 days on terrorism-related charges. These individuals were arrested in connection with their participation in the #EndBadGovernance protests earlier this month. The police have accused them of attempting to overthrow the government.

On August 8, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun requested a court order to detain individuals involved in the #EndBadGovernance protests for two months. This request, based on the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, the Nigerian Constitution, and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, was made to allow time for a complete investigation and to receive legal advice from the Attorney General of the Federation. The charges include terrorism, treason, arson, and related offences.

On Tuesday, Amnesty International criticized a court’s decision to remand minors involved in the #EndBadGovernance protests. The organization called for their immediate release, stating that the detention of these minors, some of whom were reportedly apprehended during the protests, violates their rights and lacks proper legal safeguards. Amnesty condemned the 60-day detention as an “unfair trial.”

Amnesty International has criticized the treatment of 12 children under 16 in Katsina, who are facing trial for their involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests. The organization claims these children were detained simply for being present during the protests and are at risk of being tried on dubious charges. The group also expressed concerns about the safety and legal rights of detained minors, urging their immediate release.

The #EndBadGovernance protests, which took place from August 1-10, were driven by public dissatisfaction with economic hardships and governance issues under President Tinubu, including fuel price hikes and other economic reforms. The Nigerian government has responded with a crackdown on protesters, including arrests and efforts to block organizers’ accounts.
