Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt says he will stop a proposed plan that would require public schools to collect and report the immigration status of students.
The proposal, backed by State Superintendent Ryan Walters, would have required parents or guardians to provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal immigration status during school enrollment. While it would not have prevented undocumented students from attending school, districts would have been required to report the number of students without proof of status to the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
Though the State Board of Education unanimously approved the plan last month, it needed the governor’s approval to take effect. Stitt rejected the measure, calling it unnecessary and harmful to students.
