Over 20 Long Island Schools Flagged for Poor Performance by NY State

A significant number of Long Island public school districts have been flagged for underwhelming academic performance, according to a recent Newsday report. New York state officials identified 11 schools across 11 districts in Suffolk County for issues related to low student attendance, poor test scores, and declining graduation rates during the 2023-2024 school year.

While this marks an improvement from the 29 districts flagged last year, concerns remain, especially as Patchogue-Medford’s South Ocean Middle School and Westhampton Beach Middle School have been newly added to the list. Riverhead, which was already struggling, saw its Phillips Avenue School join Roanoke Avenue Elementary School in the rankings. Other districts that remained on the list from the previous year include Brentwood, Central Islip, Longwood, Middle Country, South Country, and William Floyd, with individual schools within these districts continuing to show academic challenges.

The Wyandanch and Greenport school districts were also named in the report, though no specific schools were mentioned.
