The Oyo State Ministry of Education and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State chapter, have officially dismissed claims that a teacher at Soun High School, Ogbomoso, was beaten to death by students. The viral reports circulating online were described as false and a misrepresentation of facts.

According to statements from the Ministry’s Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Olusegun Olayiwola, the NUT Chairman, Raji Oladimeji, and the school principal, Mr. Ajayi Adeyinka, investigations revealed that Mr. Adegoke Abiodun was not attacked by students.

The incident occurred on May 28, 2025, when Mr. Adegoke confronted four students caught gambling on school premises. During the disciplinary effort, he dislocated his arm, which led him to seek medical attention. Subsequent examinations revealed that he was suffering from Stage 4 bone marrow cancer, which was the cause of his death on November 4, 2025.

Authorities emphasized that spreading false narratives about the teacher’s death has caused unnecessary tension and highlighted the importance of verifying information before sharing it. The NUT also noted that it had raised about N2 million for Mr. Adegoke’s treatment, further confirming that his death was due to illness, not violence.

The Ministry and education stakeholders urged the public to exercise caution against unverified reports, reiterating their condolences to the late teacher’s family.
