The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of eleven students from Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi, in connection with the suspected murder of two fellow students.

The affected students, identified as Hamza Tofawa and Umar Dungurawa, were reportedly attacked by their schoolmates using sharp, locally made metal objects known as “Gwale-Gwale.”

The tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage, prompting the Kano State Commissioner of Education, Ali Makoda, to order a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killings.

Providing an update on Thursday, the spokesperson for the police command, Abdullahi Haruna, stated that the arrested students are currently undergoing interrogation.

He emphasized that the investigation aims to determine the extent of each suspect’s involvement in the incident. Haruna assured the public that the police are committed to uncovering the truth and bringing all responsible parties to justice.

Reacting to the development, the Director of the Kano State Senior Secondary School Management Board, Abbas Abdullahi, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy.

He called on students across the state to exercise restraint and avoid taking the law into their own hands. Abdullahi also reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s determination to ensure that justice is served, stating that no effort will be spared in getting to the bottom of the matter.

This tragic incident is a grave violation of several fundamental child rights. Chief among these is the right to life. It equally breaches their right to protection from violence, highlighting serious lapses in supervision and safety measures.

Their right to education in a safe environment was also compromised, as the school failed to provide the secure and nurturing space essential for learning. Lastly, the right to dignity and humane treatment was denied, given the brutal and degrading nature of the attack. These violations underscore the urgent need for accountability and systemic reforms to protect children’s rights in schools.
