A 30-year-old teacher, Bukar Modu, has been arrested by the Borno State Police Command for allegedly assaulting a 10-year-old boy, Bashir Babaji, in Maiduguri. The disturbing incident, which took place in the Bulabulin Alajeri area along Baga Road, came to light after a video surfaced online showing Modu beating the boy with a whip. In the video, another unidentified boy can be seen pouring water and sand on the affected child, while Modu pins the child down with his leg to prevent him from escaping, all while the boy cries out in pain.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Daso, the assault occurred on March 16, 2025, but the video only recently went viral, prompting public outrage and swift action from law enforcement. With the help of members of the community and the Civilian Joint Task Force, the police were able to identify and apprehend the suspect.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the child, who is Modu’s student, was being punished for allegedly skipping class. The affected child was immediately taken to a hospital for medical examination and treatment, while the suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues. Daso confirmed that Bukar Modu will be charged in court once the investigation is concluded.

The police command urged the public to remain calm and avoid making inflammatory remarks that could hinder the investigation or incite unrest. Daso reassured the public that the Borno State Police Command is committed to ensuring justice and protecting the welfare of children across the state.

This incident echoes a similar case reported on January 8, when the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency confirmed the arrest of a teacher involved in another viral abuse video. The video showed a female teacher, Stella Nwadigo of Christ-Mitots School in Ikorodu, physically assaulting a three-year-old boy named Abayomi Michael by slapping him across the face.

Both cases have drawn strong condemnation from the public and renewed calls for stricter measures to protect children from abuse in educational settings.
