Pregnant Police Volunteer Sandra Birchmore was Murdered by Detective — Who Staged her Death to Look Like Suicide: Feds

Matthew Farwell, a former officer with the Stoughton Police Department in Massachusetts, has been indicted for the murder of Sandra Birchmore, a pregnant 23-year-old. Birchmore, who had been sexually abused by Farwell since she was a 15-year-old volunteer, was found strangled in her Canton apartment in February 2021. Farwell allegedly staged the scene to look like a suicide. Birchmore was three months pregnant at the time and had recently informed Farwell that he might be the father.
In 2010, a 13-year-old girl met Farwell, a police officer, through a youth program. An investigation after her death found that Farwell began abusing her when she was 15 and he was 27. Farwell denied abusing her when she was underage, but admitted to having sex with her after she turned 16, which is the age of consent in Massachusetts.
Matthew Farwell, along with his brother William Farwell and Robert Devine, has been accused of molesting Sandra Birchmore. All three were named in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Birchmore’s family and resigned from the Stoughton Police Department in 2022.
Although no criminal charges had been filed against them until now, an independent pathologist concluded that Birchmore’s 2021 death, initially deemed a suicide, was actually a murder. Farwell, the last person seen with Birchmore, is charged with killing her with premeditation and malice. Surveillance footage showed him arriving at her apartment with a hood over his face and leaving alone shortly before her body was found.
