The Nigerian government’s decision to invalidate degree certificates from universities in Togo and Benin Republic, obtained from 2017 onward, has caused confusion for over 22,000 Nigerian graduates. The Coalition of Stakeholders in Education (CSE) has criticized this blanket ban, arguing it unfairly punishes all graduates rather than targeting only those from unaccredited or dubious institutions. The CSE’s leaders, including Dr. Shittu Sanny and Gabriel Kona, argue that the government’s decision is unjustified. They point out that many accredited universities in these countries are not being recognized and question why certificates from institutions previously deemed valid are now being invalidated.
