Vijay Cheruvu, an Indian-origin man, has sued the Sri Ashtalakshmi Hindu temple in Texas and its parent company, Jeeyar Educational Trust (JET) USA, Inc., for over USD 1 million after his 11-year-old son was branded with a hot iron rod during a religious ceremony in August 2023. The lawsuit, filed in Fort Bend County, claims the boy experienced extreme pain, permanent disfigurement, and developed an infection. Cheruvu’s attorney, Brant Stogner, highlighted the illegality of branding a child in Texas, even with parental consent, and emphasised the need to raise community awareness to prevent such incidents. The boy, who attended the ceremony with his mother, was branded without his father’s knowledge or consent. The temple has not responded to calls or emails regarding the incident.
