February 19 2024- Australian filmmaker Rionne McAvoy has released a documentary film titled “The Ones Left Behind,” aiming to shed light on the often-taboo subject of poverty in wealthy countries like Japan. The film, which was released last year, focuses on the stories of single mothers raising their children in poverty. It highlights the challenges these women face, including working long hours, minimal sleep, and juggling responsibilities of childcare and housework. McAvoy’s goal is to initiate discussions on a topic often avoided, offering insights into the lives of these women and presenting a different perspective on Japanese society, where traditional roles for women, such as marrying and becoming stay-at-home mothers, are considered normal.
