Birmingham Area School System Threatened with State Takeover Amid ‘Major Concern’

The Bessemer City Schools in Alabama are facing the threat of a state takeover due to serious and systemic issues identified by State Superintendent Eric Mackey. These include financial mismanagement such as failing to approve budgets and salary schedules on time, operational inefficiencies, and neglect of critical facility maintenance. Mackey criticized the board for dysfunctional governance practices, such as frequent meeting cancellations due to lack of quorum, which he believes hinder effective decision-making for the district. The state may intervene unless significant improvements are made promptly.
