The U.S. Census Bureau recently revealed that the gender wage gap has widened for the first time in two decades, with women now earning just 83 cents for every dollar earned by men. This is particularly challenging for mothers, as balancing work and family in the U.S. remains difficult. Despite women graduating at higher rates and entering fields like law and medicine, the pay gap expands for women in their mid-30s, coinciding with increased childcare responsibilities. Many mothers are forced to make tough decisions, often leading to reduced hours or lower-paying jobs with flexible schedules, or even exiting the workforce entirely due to skyrocketing childcare costs. This creates a cycle of economic disadvantage for women, especially for Black and Hispanic women who already earn significantly less.
