Confronting Chronic Absenteeism: NYC Schools Lean on Data, tap peer-to-Peer Support

< 1 min read

Bronx Principal David Liu observed a gradual rise in chronic absenteeism at Gotham Collaborative High School after students returned to in-person learning post-pandemic. As school routines resumed, many students felt overwhelmed, especially as financial supports for families diminished, increasing their home responsibilities. To tackle this issue, the school has implemented a data system to monitor attendance and partnered with community organizations for support. They also incentivize attendance through initiatives like breakfast raffles and day trips. In New York City, schools are adopting restorative justice methods to address absenteeism, focusing on support rather than punishment. A student is deemed chronically absent if they miss at least 10% of the school year, equating to 18 days in a 180-day calendar.
