Jo Ellis from West Yorkshire criticized the educational system after her five-year-old son, Lucas, was permanently excluded from primary school due to his special educational needs. Ellis claimed the system failed Lucas by not providing the necessary support, instead opting for expulsion as an “easy solution.” Lucas, awaiting a diagnosis for ADHD and autism, was left without education for 12 weeks and is now receiving only two hours of schooling per day at a pupil referral unit. The problem reflects a broader crisis in England, where exclusions have reached a record high, disproportionately affecting children with special educational needs (SEND). More than 9,000 children were excluded last year, with a significant impact on their academic outcomes.
