Limited resources and staffing challenges are hindering schools’ ability to offer academic programming after school, according to NCES Commissioner Peggy Carr. A recent NCES survey found that 74% of public schools struggled to fill teaching vacancies ahead of the 2024-25 school year, a slight improvement from previous years. Despite this, 13% of K-12 students are expected to enroll in academically-focused after-school programs, with schools relying on a mix of local district funds (59%), federal grants (47%), and other sources to finance these programs. However, with the expiration of federal pandemic relief funds, many after-school programs are expected to scale back. In 2024, 83% of schools offered summer school programs, with 80% having an academic focus, though funding shortages affected staffing for these programs.
