Philip Chism, at age 14, murdered his 24-year-old math teacher Colleen Ritzer in October 2013 in Massachusetts. Chism attacked Ritzer in the school bathroom, strangled and stabbed her, then sexually assaulted her. He moved Ritzer’s body to nearby woods using a recycling bin, where he assaulted her again. Chism was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 2016 for this crime. In April 2024, Chism was convicted of attempted murder for attacking a correctional officer months after his initial arrest. The medical examiner testified that Ritzer may have still been alive during the second assault in the woods. Judge David Lowy described the murder as “brutal and senseless” during sentencing.
