February 7 2024-House lawmakers passed a $78 billion bipartisan tax package, which includes an expansion of the child tax credit (CTC). The proposed changes aim to expand access to the CTC and retroactively increase the refundable portion for 2023. Although not as generous as the pandemic-era CTC, the modifications are expected to provide significant financial support for many families, according to Chuck Marr from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. The bill, which received overwhelming approval in the House, still requires 60 votes in the Senate to pass amid competing priorities.
