Illinois State Board of Education Closes Investigation on Chicago’s Restraint and Timeout Practices after Almost two Years

The Illinois State Board of Education has concluded its investigation into Chicago Public Schools’ use of physical restraint and timeout practices, acknowledging “significant strides” made by the district in ensuring staff are properly trained in restraint procedures. The investigation, initiated in the fall of 2022, was prompted by concerns over improper use of restraints, untrained staff handling incidents, lack of official oversight, and failure to notify parents about restraint or timeout events. The state had previously criticized the district for putting students at risk due to inadequate staff training.
