Since August 2024, Broward County Public Schools in South Florida have implemented a ban on cellphone use during the school day, including lunch and breaks, to combat excessive screen time and its links to anxiety and depression among students. However, this policy has faced resistance, not only from students but also from parents. A survey of over 70,000 students, teachers, and parents revealed that nearly 20% of parents believe the ban is negatively affecting their children’s well-being, with the primary concern being the inability to communicate with family members, especially in emergencies.
