Major Fears Over Labour’s Nursery Plan for 9-Month-Olds in Schools

< 1 min read

Early childhood experts have raised concerns that primary schools in England may lack the necessary space, facilities, and staff to accommodate the government’s promise of 100,000 new nursery places. This commitment includes providing 30 hours of free childcare for eligible children aged nine months to three years, starting next September. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson announced that 300 new state nurseries will open in schools with vacant classrooms due to declining birthrates. However, experts argue that the allocated £15 million may not suffice to prepare these schools for young children. Dr. Aaron Bradbury emphasized the need for specialized facilities, such as smaller toilets and outdoor play areas, which differ significantly from traditional classroom setups.
