Many migrant students exempted from Colorado standardized testing

< 1 min read

Thousands of students in Colorado, particularly new-to-country students who arrived after October, are exempt from standardized tests this year following guidance from the Colorado Department of Education. This exemption, welcomed by many in Denver Public Schools (DPS), including students, parents, and teachers, relieves the stress of Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) testing for migrant children who are still adjusting to their new environment. At Munroe Elementary School, fifth-grade teacher Javier Ramirez emphasizes creating a welcoming environment for new students and appreciates the decision not to subject them to testing so soon after their arrival. DPS Executive Director of Multilingual Education, Adrienne Endres, highlights the trauma and ineffectiveness of subjecting new students to assessments in unfamiliar languages and content. The exemption allows these students to focus on learning and adaptation, while the district continues to gather data through other means.
