As summer ends, a group of Nantucket children is preparing to start kindergarten through the Nantucket Community School’s Summer Boost Program. This initiative, running for over 15 years, helps bridge the gap for children who didn’t attend preschool by teaching essential skills like letter and number recognition, motor skills, and verbal expression. Operating for five weeks in alignment with the Nantucket Public School’s summer schedule, the program serves 28 students, or 25% of the incoming kindergarten class. The program focuses not only on academic basics but also on social and emotional learning, helping children adapt to classroom routines and expectations.
