More than 12 Million Students Nationwide are Missing 18 Days or More of School Year

The National Center for Educational Statistics reports approximately 49 million students in K-12 public schools in the U.S. Research by Dr. Nat Malkus reveals that around 29%, or over 12 million students, are chronically absent, missing at least 18 days of school annually. This issue has worsened since the COVID pandemic, with 15% of students missing 10% of the school year prior to the pandemic. By 2022, this figure had risen to nearly 29%, indicating a significant increase in absenteeism that poses challenges for both students and schools.
