New Detroit Schools Program Will Pay Kids to Stay After School and Work on Reading

< 1 min read

The Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) is initiating a new program to improve student literacy, addressing ongoing challenges highlighted by a “right to read” lawsuit in 2016. Currently, over half of 8th graders are reading two or more grades below their level, an issue that Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti states impacts students’ progress through high school. Freshman Syncere Williams expressed his struggles with reading, citing difficulties with complex words and forgetfulness. Recent assessments show slight improvement, with 54% of 8th graders still reading significantly below grade level. Vitti emphasized the importance of attendance, noting that students who miss fewer than nine days are more likely to achieve grade-level literacy and college readiness. High absentee rates complicate efforts to provide additional literacy support.
