In an effort to counter declining enrollment, a NYC charter school introduced a 12-hour school day in September. Principal Joanne Hunt explained that the initiative was designed to address families’ needs for affordable childcare and longer hours. Since its implementation, the school has seen an increase of nearly 100 students. The extended hours include arts, crafts, drumming, dance, coding lessons, and a full dinner. Teachers and staff who participate receive additional pay. Funding comes primarily from Department of Education funds, federal support, and private donations. Both students and parents have responded positively, noting improved academics and better engagement. Parents appreciate the safe environment, keeping children off the streets and engaged in productive activities.
