Only a handful of schools opt to exercise the permission granted by lawmakers for staff and teachers to carry firearms.

In Indiana, it’s been over a decade since lawmakers allowed school districts to arm teachers, but the actual number of armed educators remains unclear due to denials and secrecy from state agencies. An investigation contacted numerous districts, finding that most haven’t authorized staff carry, with many preferring funding for school resource officers (SROs) over arming teachers. While some districts have allowed staff carry, few have utilized state training funds. Critics argue that arming teachers is burdensome and potentially dangerous, advocating for trained law enforcement instead. However, proponents argue for empowering staff to defend against active shooters, highlighting constitutional rights and the need for swift responses in rural areas.
