On the first day of the 2024-25 school year, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) experienced disruptions from a 4.4-magnitude earthquake and an industrial explosion near a school. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho reported no damage to LAUSD buildings and no injuries. Only Woodrow Wilson High School needed to evacuate, while other students were advised to duck under desks and avoid windows. The explosion, believed to have occurred at an Atlas metal recycling plant near Jordan Senior High School, is under investigation.
