Putney Teacher Remains in Position after Carrying Pupil.

< 1 min read

A former primary school teacher in Putney, south London, faced suspension after carrying a pupil across a playground who claimed he “couldn’t breathe” in January 2020. Despite this incident, Jill Turetzky was permitted to continue teaching. The teaching misconduct panel determined that Turetzky engaged in inappropriate physical contact with the Year 1 pupil, who was described as vulnerable. CCTV footage showed Turetzky lifting the pupil off the ground and carrying him across the playground to the classroom entrance. While the panel found Turetzky’s actions unacceptable, they noted her previous good conduct and the incident as likely a one-time occurrence. Consequently, the panel concluded that imposing a prohibition order on Turetzky would be disproportionate. The ruling, made on behalf of the Education Secretary, cited Turetzky’s insight into the incident, her previous good character, and her contribution to the profession as factors in the decision not to impose a prohibition order.
