February 21 2024- In New Zealand, a jury has found South African woman Lauren Dickason guilty of murdering her three young daughters. Despite Dickason’s defense claiming she was mentally ill and not responsible for her actions due to severe depression, the jury rejected this argument. Dickason had previously admitted to killing her 2-year-old twin daughters, Maya and Karla, and their 6-year-old sister Lianè, in their Timaru home almost two years ago. Prosecutors acknowledged her depression but argued it did not justify a medical defense, asserting that she killed her children out of anger and resentment. The prosecution highlighted troubling phone messages and online activities, including expressions of wanting to harm her children and searching for information on the most effective overdose in kids, in the weeks leading up to the killings.
