‘The American Standard’: Durham Public Schools to Have 38 New Electric Buses

< 1 min read

Durham Public Schools is set to receive 38 new electric school buses funded by a $15 million grant from the EPA’s Clean School Bus Program. Mayor Leonardo Williams described the experience of riding the bus as a “moment of zen.” EPA Administrator Michael Regan emphasized the benefits of cleaner air and healthier communities that come from transitioning to electric buses. Superintendent Anthony Lewis highlighted the long-term savings in fuel and maintenance costs, which could also aid in bus driver recruitment. The initiative is part of a broader effort in North Carolina, where $70 million has been allocated to replace buses in 32 school districts. Regan expressed optimism that zero-emissions school buses could become the standard across the country.
