The Current State of the Teaching Profession

< 1 min read

The Pew Research Centre’s annual report on the state of the teaching profession reveals widespread dissatisfaction among teachers, challenges in student performance, and a pessimistic outlook for the future of education. Based on a survey of 2,531 public school teachers, the findings highlight:

Teacher Satisfaction: Only 33% of teachers are extremely or very satisfied with their jobs, with dissatisfaction particularly evident in pay (51%) and workload (84%). Despite this, many find fulfilment in their work.
Problems Facing Students: Teachers perceive struggles in student academic performance, behaviour, and mental health, exacerbated by factors like poverty and disruptions from cellphones.
The State of Education: A majority of teachers believe public education has deteriorated over the past five years, with expectations of further decline. Both the political climate and the pandemic are seen as contributing factors.

The report underscores the need for policymakers to address these issues, potentially influencing the ongoing exodus from the teaching profession.
