The owner of a Charlotte daycare center facing six misdemeanor child abuse charges, Leslye Denis Torrence, opted not to have an attorney during a court appearance. The charges stemmed from an incident in February at Midwood Learning Academy where unsupervised children were allegedly seen playing and riding in a car without seatbelts. Torrence called the children to the car, which drove away with a door open, according to a witness. Torrence’s bench trial is scheduled for July 17. The state suspended the daycare’s license, citing concerns for children’s welfare. Torrence was released on a $60,000 bond. A concerned father expressed dismay over the incident, highlighting systemic issues at the daycare.
