‘They just … abandon me’ | Bastrop ISD family says bullying concerns aren’t being addressed by district

< 1 min read

Julio Meraz, husband of Bastrop resident Gonzalez, criticized the school board’s decision, calling it unfair and suggesting they prioritize the well-being of students. Their daughter Valeria, a freshman at Bastrop High School, felt abandoned by the board’s actions. Gonzalez and Meraz, parents of four children in Bastrop ISD, expressed concern about their children facing verbal abuse and harassment, with some incidents escalating to physical altercations. Gonzalez claimed the school administration ignored student complaints, leading to her being served a trespass warning, preventing further complaints. Gonzalez and her advocate, Perla Hopkins, emphasized the need for the district to address bullying and violence. They participated in a news conference to raise awareness about the issue. Hopkins suggested that recent incidents reflect deeper problems within the district, possibly stemming from student disengagement. The meeting, a Level 3 grievance hearing, aimed to address these concerns before the new school year.
