The economic downturn in Nigeria has created significant challenges for families, forcing parents to make tough decisions about their children’s education. In an interview, four Nigerian parents discussed their difficulties in paying school fees amid rising inflation and unemployment. One parent from Ikeja, Lagos, shared their emotional experience of having to move their children from private to public school due to the escalating costs.

One parent shared the emotional pain of having to transfer her children from a school they loved due to unaffordable fees, prioritizing their education over the prestige of a private school. Another parent from Ogba, Lagos, described the difficult decision of weighing the cost of school bus fees against the effort of driving their kids to and from school. This parent wakes up early daily to manage the logistics, highlighting the sacrifices families are making in the face of financial challenges.

One parent expressed the exhaustion of making sacrifices for her children’s education, stating she would do whatever it takes. Another parent, Kayode, shared that his family has had to cut essential costs, opting to photocopy classmates’ notes instead of purchasing textbooks, despite the expense. They’ve also reduced food expenses, cutting back on meat and luxuries to prioritize school fees.

Mrs. Folorunso, whose child attends a private school in Isheri, described the desperation of nearly having to withdraw her child due to unpaid fees. To raise funds, she sold their generator, which was essential during power outages. While this solution is not sustainable, she emphasized the lengths they are willing to go to keep their child in school.
