The Federal Government has issued a firm directive to secondary schools across Nigeria: only schools with certified teachers will be allowed to serve as examination centres for public exams.

In a memo released on Thursday, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, instructed the Registrar and Chief Executive of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) to ensure strict compliance with the policy.

The move, he explained, aligns with government efforts to strengthen professionalism in teaching and restore dignity to the education sector.

From 2027, accreditation of both public and private schools for WASSCE, NABTEB, NECO, and NBIAS examinations will be tied to TRCN certification of their teachers. Schools that fail to comply will be barred from hosting these examinations.

According to the memo, compliance will be monitored in phases: schools must achieve at least 75% compliance by 2026 and 100% by 2027.

To aid smooth implementation, non-education graduates with at least one year of classroom experience are encouraged to enrol in the National Teachers Institute’s abridged professional certification programme, which lasts between three to six months, after which participants will qualify for TRCN licensing.

Dr. Alausa also urged state governments to take this directive seriously and to sensitize stakeholders to avoid disruptions to exam accreditation. He emphasized that unqualified teachers must be removed to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s education system.

This policy echoes a broader truth: every child has the right to quality education, which guarantees access to learning in an environment led by qualified and competent teachers.
