Senate Approves ₦50 Million for Families of Heroes Who Died During Oyo School Abduction

The Nigerian Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation to the families of security personnel and teachers who lost their lives during the operation that secured the freedom of abducted schoolchildren in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The gesture follows the successful operation that led to the freedom of 39 pupils and seven teachers who were abducted from their schools on May 15, 2026. The children have since been reunited with their families and are receiving continued medical and psychosocial support.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced that each of the five affected families would receive ₦10 million to support the children and dependants left behind by the deceased.
The Senate also called for comprehensive medical care and welfare support for Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain, who sustained serious injuries while shielding the children during the rescue operation.
Lawmakers commended the coordinated efforts of the security agencies and reaffirmed the need to strengthen measures that protect children in schools and communities from attacks.
They further urged the Federal Government to intensify intelligence gathering, improve surveillance technology and strengthen security around schools to prevent future abductions.
Child protection advocates say the donation recognises the sacrifices made to safeguard children while underscoring the need for sustained investment in safe schools, emergency response systems and long-term support for children affected by armed violence.
