Nigerian Students Shine at Global Math Olympiad, Winning Gold, Top World Rankings
The Nigerian students have demonstrated their academic prowess in the 2026 Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC), which saw thousands of young minds from across the globe compete.
About 2,285 students from 40 countries and 1,113 schools participated in the competition, which took place in Singapore from July 17 to 21, in mathematics, logical reasoning and critical-thinking challenges.
Two Nigerian students were among the top 10 in the world, which shows that when children have access to quality learning opportunities and strong academic support, they have the potential to excel in Nigeria.
Agu Chukwuka of Grundtvig International Secondary School, Oba, Anambra State, led the Nigerian team which secured two gold and one bronze medals in the Mathematics Olympiad Contest, Math Warriors and Math Master Mind events. He also finished in the 8th position in the International Mathematics Olympiad Contest of Grade 7.
Okpere-Udo Hallel of Graceland International School, Port Harcourt, won second place in the Grade 10 Mathematics Olympiad Contest, which took place globally. He also won a gold medal in the Mathematics Olympiad Contest and a bronze medal in Math Warriors.
Other Nigerian students also won gold, silver and bronze medals in other categories, which is an indication of the country’s increasing participation in international STEM competitions.
Ms Josiah Mercy, Director of SIMOC, Nigeria, noted that the accomplishments demonstrated that Nigerian children were able to perform well against their peers from around the world when they are given proper mentorship, quality education and exposure to the international community.
The achievement of the young mathematicians demonstrates the value of investing in children’s education, creativity and problem solving skills to equip them for future opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
