‘Signing-Out’ Parties Banned in Sokoto Secondary Schools

The Sokoto State Government has announced a total ban on all forms of “signing-out” celebrations by graduating secondary school students, citing increasing cases of misconduct, vandalism, and public disturbances associated with the practice.

The ban, which affects both public and private schools, was made public on Thursday by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Ahmad Ladan Ala. According to him, what was once a joyful tradition marking the end of academic exams has deteriorated into acts that contradict the values of discipline and responsibility that the education system is meant to instill.

The ministry emphasized the importance of restoring order and academic focus in schools and has urged parents and guardians to cooperate by discouraging their children from engaging in unapproved end-of-school celebrations.

The official directive, signed by Abubakar Abdullahi, Director of Examination Matters, mandates strict compliance by all secondary school heads across the state.

This decision underscores a broader commitment to protecting the integrity of the school environment and reinforcing positive values among students. At its core, this move aligns with the fundamental right to education, which extends beyond access to classrooms to learn in a safe, orderly, and respectful setting.

By curbing practices that disrupt learning and promote indiscipline, the government is taking necessary steps to ensure that schools remain spaces where academic focus, character development, and the well-being of every learner are prioritized.
