A devastating fire swept through Jarma UK Academy in Sokoto yesterday evening, destroying several parts of the school, including students’ hostels, the Principal and Vice Principal’s offices, a computer lab, and a staff room on the upper floor. Clothing, mattresses, blankets, and other personal belongings of students were lost in the blaze.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

In response, a delegation from the Sokoto State Government, led by Secretary to the State Government, Muhammad Bello Sifawa, visited the scene to assess the damage. He was accompanied by Chief of Staff Aminu Haliru Dikko and Attorney-General Nasiru Mohammed Binji.

While commiserating with the school’s management, Sifawa expressed gratitude that no lives were lost and no student was injured in the incident.

He praised the vision behind the Academy, which was founded in 2018 by philanthropist Alhaji Ummarun Kwabo, the Jarman Sokoto, and currently houses 176 students, most of whom are orphans displaced by Boko Haram insurgency in Borno and Yobe States. The school combines Western and Islamic education, along with entrepreneurial training, to equip students with life skills.
