Spotlight of the Week: Hetty Margarete Johnston AM

This week, we shine a light on Hetty Margarete Johnston AM, a tireless advocate for child protection and a voice for vulnerable children across Australia and beyond.
Hetty Johnston is the founder and former Executive Director of Bravehearts Inc., Australia’s leading organization in the fight against child sexual assault. Established in 1997, Bravehearts has become a cornerstone in advocating for the safety and protection of children, drawing attention to the crime of paedophilia and the need for robust preventative measures.
With a career marked by passion and determination, Hetty has served in numerous influential roles, including as Chair of the Queensland Child Protection Week Committee and a board member for NAPCAN and ASCA. She has also consulted for the Federal Government on cyber safety and child protection initiatives, highlighting her expertise and commitment to safeguarding governance.
Hetty’s advocacy goes beyond organizational leadership. She is a sought-after keynote speaker, media commentator, and consultant, amplifying the message of child safety nationally and internationally. Her work has inspired positive changes in areas such as criminal justice, political accountability, and community awareness, making her a pivotal figure in child protection.
In addition to her advocacy, Hetty is an author, having published In the Best Interests of the Child, where she shares her insights and beliefs about protecting children. Her achievements have been recognized through numerous accolades, including being a finalist for Australian of the Year (2006) and Queenslander of the Year (2008), as well as receiving the Australian Lawyers Alliance Civil Justice Award twice.
Even after stepping down from Bravehearts in March 2021, Hetty continues her mission as a child protection specialist, safeguarding consultant, and advocate. Her unwavering dedication to this cause inspires us all to work towards a safer, more protective environment for children everywhere.
