Student Opens Fire at Dallas High School, Injuring Classmates

At least four people were injured on Tuesday afternoon when a student opened fire at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas, Texas. The shooting, which occurred shortly after 1 p.m. local time, caused panic among students and staff as gunfire rang out through the school halls. One student described hearing seven gunshots before running with the crowd of fleeing classmates.
Authorities quickly responded, and one student is now in custody. Officials confirmed that the school has since been secured. The Dallas Independent School District stated that the weapon was brought into the building outside of normal intake hours, bypassing the campus’s metal detectors and clear backpack policy. How the firearm made it past security remains under investigation.
According to the Dallas Fire Department, three of the students were shot but are expected to survive, as their injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening. The affected students, all between the ages of 15 and 18, were transported to Baylor Scott & White, Parkland, and Methodist Dallas hospitals. In total, around 900 students were present on campus during the shooting. Evacuations were directed toward Eagle Stadium as emergency services flooded the area.
Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde addressed growing concern over the frequency of such events, especially following a previous shooting at the same school in April 2024. “Quite frankly, this is just becoming way too familiar, and it should not be familiar,” she said.
Governor Greg Abbott condemned the incident as a “senseless act of violence,” pledging full state support for affected students, families, and law enforcement. He also reiterated the importance of ensuring justice and preventing further violence in Texas schools.
In the wake of the shooting, Wilmer-Hutchins High School has canceled classes for the week. Mental health services will be provided to students and staff as the community grapples with yet another traumatic event. The identity of the shooter has not been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
